Concerts Schedule 18.03 - 24.03

Here's a handfull of suggestions for this week evenings.

We begin with something for high quality post-bop fans:

Leszezk Żądło European Ensemble will play two dates, first on 19.03 at Harris Piano Jazz Bar, the second one 24.03 at PIEC'Art

20.03 Possibly the most interesting concert of the week.
Rafal Mazur will guest Marco Eneidi at Literki
The concert is part of the Improwizje series.
I had a very interesting talk with Rafal last weekend and will try to post parts of the conversation soon on the blog.

on 20.03 and 21.03 Kuba Pluzek on piano will entertain audience at PIEC'Art. I've seen him play Stevie Wonder songs, jazz standards, modern jazz as well as completely free jam sessions. He will play with a trio featuring Max Mucha and Dawid Fortuna.

21.03 as well the High Definition quartet will play at Harris Piano Jazz Bar.

I've written about the ensemble led by Piotr Orzechowski on few occasions already so let me just repeat it is a very high quality modern jazz, video below should be a prove enough.

21.03 again, the first day of the spring, Chlopcy Kontra Basia, one of my favourite polish bands will play again in Krakow, this time supporting the concert by indie-pop singer Julia Marcell at Forty Kleparz

22.03 N.S.I. Quartet at PIEC'Art.

The modern jazz quartet is : Bartlomiej Prucnal (saxophones), Cybrian Baszynski (trumpet), Michael Parker (bass) and Dawid Fortuna (drums) swept the Jazz Juniors competition in the december of the 2012.

23.03 Mike Parker Unified Theory at PIEC'Art.

Mike Parker is a New York born, living in Krakow bass player. His compositions for the Unified Theory band try to bring together such distand genres like avant jazz, rap, hip hop or rock. The group features some of the most prominent young talents of Krakow scene:

S.Pezda-ts, C.Baszyński-tr, M.Gawęda-p, M.Parker-db, P.Dobosz-dr

on 23.03 as well on of the most jazz-rock-latin-indie-cinematic orchestras in the history, the fabulous Mitch & Mitch will entertain you at Dom Kultury Kolejarza

Concerts Concerts for the week 28.05 - 03.05

Quite frankly the sunny Krakow is recently too beautiful to stay indoors for anything more than necessary which is the reason for no new reviews in a while and probably it will stay so until some bad weather weekend (hoping to get to firt listen with a whole pile of cds). In the meantime there are still a lot of concerts going on and here's a bunch of suggestions for the next week in Krakow

Monday 28.05
Jacaszek at Alchemia. A well known figure of polish electronic scene. Dark and mysterious and hauntingly beatiful music.
(this one also means another archive radio program for tomorrow).






Thursday 31.05
High Definition Quartet (quite a lot about them on the blog recently) - a very promising young polish jazz quartet, definitely a band you need to know.

And a dilemma for Sunday 03.05
Another concert in the series of "Protruding Ear" by Maszyna Alladyna - Krakow based improv group. PiecArt. Something for the experimental-minded ears. Starts around 8pm.



Alternatively Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet at Harris Piano Jaz Bar with modern take on classic jazz sound. Starts around 9pm. Make your choice.

High Definition at Piec'ART (23.02)

There's something incredible happening around in the polish jazz scene. Young musicians with incredible skills sets, fantastic education, open mindset and no complexes. I have just written briefly about jam session at Literki and here's another clear chance to write about new polish jazz. I stumbled first on Piotr Orzechowski's name on Maciej Nowotny's polish-jazz blog. High Definition is a quartet led by Piotr and they play jazz that is clearly inspired by the classic sound of the 60', 70'  yet is unmistakenably modern - I think especially about hi-hat/rimshots drums'n'bass patterns played by Patryk Dobosz. They opened the night with Ana Maria by Wayne Shorter, there are strong echoes of Keith Jarret's american quartet in Orzechowski's playing and compositions - some blues, gospel echoes as well. Great rhythm section, fantastic composition's structure (no easy task to keep the audience's attention for 20 minutes pieces of music no matter what genre you play), fiery solos - it was all there. High Definition is clearly going to be at the top of polish jazz scene and they deserve as well international attention (the band won I prize in Jazz Hoeilaart last year, Orzechowski won the Grand Prix at Montreux as well). Let me keep the text short - the videos below should make up for the lack more description. Absolutely great concert from the band that only started what I hope will be a long and succesfull journey.
